In recent years, I’ve gotten really interested in learning more about natural remedies and improving health through food. This started with wanting to grow my own food and gardening. Over the years it led me to researching more about all the amazing blessings God has given us on our beautiful planet. I have come to learn one simple truth, which is that all we really need to be healthy and to heal our bodies was already given to us in the vast array of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. I will easily be spending many more years continuing to learn about all this. And, there is far too much to discuss in a single podcast episode. So, for today, I have selected seven of these superfoods to discuss. So, let’s dive in.
- Lemons
There are so many benefits to lemons! For starters they double as cleaning agents as well as a super food. For example, you can add lemon juice and chunks of lemon to a spray bottle with vinegar, water, and dish soap for an all-purpose cleaner. You can rub the cut side of a lemon half on your bread board to freshen it and chunks of lemon peel are also great to freshen up your garbage disposal.
In addition to their cleaning super powers, lemons are bursting with vitamin C, antioxidants, and citric acid, which can support immune function, aid digestion, and promote radiant skin. Squeeze fresh lemon juice into your water, dressings, or teas for a zesty kick and a powerful health boost. - Ginger
Ginger is a potent root often used for cooking. It is known for its anti-inflammatory and digestive properties. Gingerol, the main bioactive compound in ginger, has been shown to alleviate nausea, reduce muscle pain, and lower blood sugar levels. When I was pregnant, I used to chew on bits of ginger to help with my morning sickness and I still use it any time I feel nauseated. Add grated ginger to stir-fries, smoothies, or homemade soups to reap its therapeutic benefits. It is also a great addition to teas. I add some leaves from my ginger plant to my evening teas for added flavor. It is also great grated in hot water with lemon early in the morning or to ease cold or flu symptoms. - Turmeric
Turmeric is that vibrant yellow spice often found in curry dishes. Turmeric possesses powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can help in fighting chronic diseases and reducing inflammation in the body. Incorporate turmeric into your cooking or blend it into some bone broth with some ginger for soothing and nourishing beverage. - Garlic
If you’re anything like me, you can’t live without garlic. It is a key component of just about any sofrito. It is no stretch to say garlic is a culinary staple, but it is also a nutritional powerhouse. For example, garlic contains several nutrients, such as manganese, vitamins B6 and c, and selenium.
Garlic is also rich in organosulfur compounds like allicin and several others, giving it antimicrobial, antiviral, and immune-boosting properties that can help ward off infections and support cardiovascular health through it effects in reducing blood pressure and lowering cholesterol. Garlic can also help prevent cancer by its ability to diminish the activation of carcinogens. It can also prevent Alzheimer’s and dementia. Add minced garlic to sauces, marinades, or roasted vegetables for a flavorful and nutritious boost. - Kale
One of the reasons I include kale is because it has become one of my go-to greens. The leaves are thick and sturdy, holding up well in almost any dish. I love to add it to my smoothies to get in more greens. I also love kale because it has a longer shelf life than many other greens you might find in the store.
Aside from all these benefits, kale has become considered the king of leafy greens by many. Kale is packed with vitamins A, C, and K, as well as minerals like calcium and magnesium. It is nutrient-dense and can support bone health, promote detoxification, and protect against oxidative stress. Another reason I love it is because it is versatile and tastes great raw or cooked. Enjoy kale in salads, smoothies, or sautéed with garlic and lemon for a nourishing and delicious meal. - Beets
Beets, with their rich ruby hue, are not only visually stunning but also incredibly beneficial for your health. High in antioxidants, nitrates, and betalains, beets can improve blood flow, enhance exercise performance, and support liver detoxification. They are great for an energy boost and there are several workout supplements that use beets for this reason. I will often boil a bunch for the week and use them for an afternoon pick me up snack. They are great roasted as a side dish, blended into smoothies, or grated raw into salads for a vibrant and nutritious boost. There also a variety of colors, some of which have a milder, sweeter taste than the red beets. - Rosemary
Last but not least, we have rosemary, an aromatic herb with a myriad of health benefits. Rosemary contains potent antioxidants like carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid, which can protect against oxidative damage, support brain health, and improve digestion. Add fresh rosemary to roasted vegetables, grilled meats, or homemade bread for a fragrant and flavorful twist. You can also make your own rosemary oil to help improve hair growth and strengthen your hair.
Incorporating these seven superfoods into your diet can have a profound impact on your health and well-being. Whether you’re looking to boost your immune system, reduce inflammation, support your body’s natural detoxification processes, or all of the above these nutrient-rich foods are sure to nourish and rejuvenate you from the inside out.
