Before we get into all the affirmation things, I want to share a bit about how I learned the power of affirmations. For most of my life I was chasing this standard of what I thought I should look like in my mind. This standard I had created came from what I didn’t like about my body. There were many things I used to create this standard, things like comparing myself to other girls, pictures in magazines, etc. I used things people said about my weight and the way I looked. I used rejections, betrayals, and other hurtful actions of others. They were all my proof that my body wasn’t up to the standard.
As a result, I thought that achieving this standard would change all of this. If I looked the way I thought I should look, then I’d be happy, then I’d like myself and others would too. If I looked like this standard then nobody would reject me or hurt me. If I looked like this standard I’d finally be good enough, worthy, fulfilled. And, so I went chasing the standard. I lost the amount of weight I thought I should lose. I reached the measurements I thought I should have. I fit in the size I thought I should fit. But there was a problem. I still didn’t like how my body looked. I still saw it with a critical eye. I had achieved the standard, but it didn’t make me happy. It didn’t stop the rejections, betrayals, and other hurtful behaviors of others. It didn’t make everything better like I thought it would.
I learned that it wouldn’t matter how much weight I lost or what size I wore, because it was deeper than that. I had to learn to feel all those things regardless of what my body looked like. So, I started speaking life to myself. I started using affirmations to change my state. I decided I would no longer say self-critical things and that I would only speak affirming things to myself. While there is more to shifting and transforming the mindset than affirmations, using affirmations continues to be an important practice for me.
I am currently moving through a different season in my life where I am working to shift my mindset, which has led me to focusing on different affirmations. It takes practice and discipline like any new habit, which is why I am declaring this month Affirmation April. I welcome you all to join me in speaking only life to yourself and others through use of affirmations this month. We will get into how you can do this in a bit, but first, let’s dive into the magic of affirmations.

- Reduces stress. Using affirmations helps you relax and decrease your stress by shifting your focus from your fears and anxieties to peace and tranquility.

- Be Specific and Personal: Craft affirmations that resonate with you on a personal level. Use “I am” statements and tailor them to address specific areas of your life where you seek improvement.
