Today I want to discuss our chakras and dispel some myths and hopefully clear some common misconceptions about them. Each of us has multiple chakras, but today I am focusing on the seven main chakras of our bodies. These are:
- Root
- Sacral
- Solar Plexus
- Heart
- Throat
- Third Eye
- Crown
As I’ve discussed in many previous posts and on my podcast, I have been moving through an inner healing journey for over a year now. Through this, I started learning more about our seven chakras and how they affect us. I have heard people refer to them as evil or learning about them as evil, which kind of blows my mind. I can only guess this is due, at least partially to ignorance as to what they are, which is part of our body and our being. Both science and the Bible speak to these centers of our bodies.
As you may know the concept of chakras is commonly connected to Hinduism, along with ayurveda and yoga, in which they are described as energetic centers of the body. These energy centers also align perfectly with the endocrine system, or our hormonal centers of our body. This makes sense considering the connection between emotions and hormones. Coming back full circle to the conceptualization of the chakras as energy centers, emotions are energy, and each chakra has dominant negative and positive emotions that they govern. I don’t think this was an accident on God’s part at all. Especially when you explore how the key to our physical, mental, and spiritual healing can be boiled down to clearing and balancing the chakras. I go into more depth on this aspect in Episode 24: The Connection between Health and Inner Healing, so today, I want to focus on giving you the basics of the chakras, which part of the body they are connected to, which part of the endocrine system they are connected to, and the dominant emotions involved in each.
So, now that I’ve given you an overview of the chakras, let’s get into each of the seven main chakras.
- Root.
The root chakra is at the base of the spine or tailbone. The part of the endocrine system it is connected to is the adrenal gland. The root chakra is tied to our sense of stability and safety, which makes sense when you think about it being governed by the adrenal gland – this is where our fight or flight comes from. When we are in high states of stress, running on survival mode most of the time, like I was, we experience adrenal burnout.
The negative emotion associated with the root chakra is fear and the dominant positive emotion is safety. This is the center for our sense of stability and security; so, when this chakra is in balance we feel safe, connected, and supported. When out of balance we feal angry, scared, and worried or anxious. Psychological signs of an unbalanced root chakra are anxiety, depression, and various addictions and phobias. Physical manifestations of issues with the root chakra include such things as sciatica and other low back pain, and various issues related to the lower digestive organs and other parts of the lower body. - Sacral.
The sacral chakra is in the pelvis, where your reproductive organs are. Not surprisingly the parts of the endocrine system connected to the sacral chakra are the ovaries and testes. The organs connected to the sacral chakra are the reproductive organs, kidneys, and large intestines. The primary negative emotion tied to the sacral chakra is guilt and the primary positive emotion is joy. The sacral chakra is our center for creativity and pure emotion.
When this chakra is out of balance we experience feeling unsure of ourselves, vulnerable, and shameful. When it is in balance we feel bold, passionate, and outgoing. Some of the mental health issues that may be connected to the sacral chakra are eating disorders, libido issues, and unbalanced or extreme emotions. Physical conditions that are related to the sacral chakra are urinary tract issues, various sexual disorders, and issues with the reproductive organs. - Solar Plexus.
The solar plexus is in the center of the abdomen. I think of it as the power center. It is the source of our confidence. It is tied to the stomach and other organs of the digestive system and housed in the midsection. The part of the endocrine system it is related to is the pancreas, which is the center for hormones related to digestion.
The primary negative emotion associated with the solar plexus is shame and the primary positive emotion is confidence. Mental health conditions connected to the solar plexus include insomnia and eating disorders. Physical symptoms that can result from issues in the solar plexus include digestive issues and diseases, poor metabolism, and diabetes. - Heart.
Ok, this one is obvious. This chakra is tied to the heart, but also governs the lungs, and circulation. The part of the endocrine system it is related to is the thymus gland. The dominant negative emotion is grief, and the dominant positive emotion is love.
Mental health conditions or symptoms related to the heart chakra includes apathy, depression, infidelity, and hopelessness. Physical conditions include those of the lungs, like pneumonia or asthma, and heart conditions or symptoms related to circulation like atherosclerosis, heart attack, stroke. - Throat.
The fifth chakra is the throat chakra, which, of course is tied to the throat. So this is the voice box/vocal chords, esophagus, sinuses, ears. The thyroid gland is the primary component of the endocrine system associated with the throat chakra. The primary negative emotion here is dishonesty and the positive emotion is honesty or openness.
Some of the mental health conditions related to the throat can include anxiety, ADHD, and poor coping skills. The physical conditions associated with this chakra include sinus issues, thyroid issues, and diseases or symptoms of the mouth and throat. - Third Eye.
This is the sixth chakra and is in the middle of the forehead. It is associated with your central nervous system, your face – sinuses, ears, eyes, brain, and the pineal gland. The dominant emotions associated with the third eye are disillusionment and empathy. Some of the mental symptoms that arise from issues with this chakra include migraines. neurological disorders, and personality disorders. Physical symptoms include diseases of the eyes and ears as well as spinal conditions. - Crown.
Last, the seventh chakra is the crown chakra, which is also related to parts of the brain, such as the cerebral cortex and the central nervous system. The part of the endocrine system it is tied to is the pituitary gland. The dominant emotions or feelings are confusion and calm. Mental symptoms or conditions related to the crown are dementia, epilepsy, and schizophrenia. Physical symptoms include autoimmune diseases and neurological disorders.
So, this gives you a sense of each of these seven primary energy centers of the body, how emotions are related to each, and the various types of mental and physical symptoms and conditions that can manifest from emotions that we don’t resolve. I believe this is why there are many verses in the Bible that advise us not to dwell in negative emotions.
For example, Ephesians 4:26, which says Be ye angry and sin not; let not the sun go down upon your wrath…, or, Psalm 37:8, Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. Two more examples are in Philippians, first 4:6, which states be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. Philippians 4:8 …whatsoever thins are true, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever thins are lovely, whatsoever things are good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
I also think it is interesting that there are seven deadly sins, that also correspond to these energy centers and emotions. Again, I don’t think this is an accident. The key to our healing lies within us. God gave us everything we need. This is a deep and complex topic so I will leave it at that for today.
